Daikuma study
Da oggi e nei prossimi giorni a venire posterò prima gli studi, poi le 6 tavole del progetto Daikuma che ho presentato al Project Contest del Lucca Comics and Games 2012. Sebbene non sia passato in finale, resta comunque un lavoro sviluppato in tempi brevissimi ed a cui ho dedicato fieramente fatica e sacrifici.

More Panda
Ehilà, è da tanto che non posto qualcosa sul blog! Approfitto per postare una nuova immagine del mio, tanto per cambiare, Panda Samurai: Daikuma, realizzata pochi giorni or sono.
La battuta "Non porto il cappello, io!" è dedicata al mio ex prof della Scuola Comics, Paolo, ed è stata l'efficacissima scusa con cui ho tentato di sedare i suoi fondati sospetti circa il fatto che il mio Panda fosse pressoché identico a Chen Stormstout, il Pandaren protagonista del video opening dell'espansione di World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, apparsa recentemente anche alla TV. La differenza più palese tra i due (eccetto il piccolissimo dettaglio che entrambi siano dei cazzutissimi Panda!), è che il mio non porta per l'appunto il cappello. Difesa formidabile, devo dire, che mi ha seriamente fatto pensare di mollare tutto per intraprendere una già promettente carriera d'avvocato.
Scherzi a parte, non ho fatto mai segreto nemmeno in passato che l'ispirazione da cui ha tratto origine il mio Panda Samurai derivi dai Pandaren dell'universo di Warcraft. Fermo restando che l'unica cosa da cui ho attinto sia l'idea del panda antropomorfo in un mondo fantasy orientale, ho lasciato del tutto fuori l'ambientazione e le personalità tipiche dei Pandaren, per crearne una mia. La prima volta che lo misi su tavola da fumetto fu circa quattro anni fa, come esperimento e diletto privato e personale (e quando dell'espansione coi Pandaren non v'era nemmeno l'ombra), finché non ho lavorato più seriamente ad una storia sensata, ispirata ad alcune vicende del personaggio storico giapponese Ashikaga Takauji (1305 - 1358 d.C.), proposta poi e alla Scuola Comics e al Project Contest del Lucca Comics. Nell'ultimo anno c'è stato un BOOM del fenomeno "Panda" nel mondo del marketing, i cui vincitori sono Pandaren e Kung Fu Panda; avendo due colossi di vendite come questi è facile indurre ad additare Daikuma come un plagio. Tante opere minori o semi-sconosciute hanno cercato di seguire la scia del fenomeno "Panda", proponendo storie di panda ma viste da differenti punti di vista; ciò che voglio io, è immettermi in questa scia, ma per raccontare una storia che ritengo di possibile interesse ed originale, per un personaggio altrettanto originale; costui non è né un praticante fanatico di Kung-fu, né ha parenti al Birrificio Triplo Malto; vaga in un tetro Giappone fiabesco e a tratti gotico, in cui c'è un unico Panda senziente e la cui unica forza motrice è la vendetta. Spero che un giorno anche qualche editore possa scorgere del potenziale in questa storia.

Heythere, it's been a long time since the last post. Here's a new picture of my, so much for change, Samurai Panda: Daikuma, accomplished a couple of days ago.
The beating Daikuma's saying is "I'm not wearing any hat!" and it is dedicated to my ex-teacher, Paolo. That beating is also the "brilliant" excuse I picked up to prove him that my Panda Daikuma had graphicly nothing to do with Chen Stormstout, the World of Warcraft latest expansion Pandaren, also protagonist of the opening cinematic of the game, recently showed on the tube too. The biggest graphical difference between the two guys (except the "very little detail" that they are both badass pandas!) is of course the fact that mine is not wearing any hat. An amazing comeback of myself, I must say; an example of such an effective defence made me seriously wonder why I'm still here drawing comics while I could start a promising lawyer career!
All kidding aside, even in the past I revealed with no sorta hidings the true origins of my Panda character inspiration and the fact that it's directly related to the very Pandarens from Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. Still, all it's derived from this inspiration was only the "Panda" idea and the oriental fantasy context. No culture, personality, no trace of Pandaren soul at all were involved in my project, for I wanted to create something new, something mine. The first time I drawn a Panda Samurai comic page was four years ago, as a personal experiment and pleasure (at that time, the Mists of Pandaria Warcraft expansion was not even supposed to be thought eather), so I tried to improve an original story, an original background for Daikuma, inspired to some of the very deeds accomplished by Ashikaga Takauji (1305 - 1358 A.D.) from Japan ancient history; after that I proposed this new story at the comics school and at the Lucca Comics Project Contest. In the last year, there has been a real explosion of the "Panda" phenomenon through the marketing scenario. The winners and the founders of this development have been both Mists of Pandaria and Kung fu Panda universes. With two sale and fame titans like these, it'd be pretty easy to point Daikuma as a cribwork. But many minor projects have tried to follow the drift of this "Panda" current, proposing pandas stories, but seen from different points of view; all I want to do is try to flow into this mainstream, with a new story, a new concept of a Panda type: a non-Kung-fu nerd Panda; a Panda without any relatives in the Stormstout Brewery; a Panda that wanders in a fantasy and almost gothic Japan, a place in which there is only one sentient Panda that only claims his revenge. I hope that some day an editor could seek some potential from this story.

Shingon Daikuma Project
Qui di seguito le tavole del progetto francese presso la Scuola Comics. Ambientazione, storia e personaggi originali e creati da me. L'idea del Panda è nata da un mix d'ispirazione a metà tra Po di "Kung Fu Panda" ed i "Pandaren" della saga videoludica di "Warcraft". La storia e le vicende, prendono luogo in una Terra del Sol Levante immaginaria e sono ispirate alle imprese di Ashikaga Takauji, un celebre personaggio della storia del Giappone, vissuto nel XIV secolo. Le pagine sono tre al momento, ma spero di riuscire un giorno a migliorare stile e struttura e proporre il progetto a qualche casa editrice.
Le pagine sono inchiostrate a china e colorate in prevalenza con acrilici liquidi. Qualche uso sporadico anche di acrilici solidi, come nel caso dei bianchi o dell'incarnato del mostro delle ultime due tavole.
The pages are inked with Indian Ink and coloured mostly with liquid acrylic paints, excepting for the white parts and the skin of the pink monster in the last two pages, which are tinted with opaque acrylic paints.
Nel frattempo, spero che vi piacciano!
Le pagine sono inchiostrate a china e colorate in prevalenza con acrilici liquidi. Qualche uso sporadico anche di acrilici solidi, come nel caso dei bianchi o dell'incarnato del mostro delle ultime due tavole.

The followings pages are from the French Project requested from the "Scuola Comics" school. Setting, story and characters are all my creations. The concept of a "Panda" hero came from both the settings of Kung Fu Panda and the Pandaren race from the Warcraft videogame saga. The story and its events take place in a faery Japan and the protagonist's adventures are inspired to the Ashikaga Takauji's, a famous personality of the Japan history in the XIV century. The pages are three, since now. It is my hope to improve style and general structure due to have a better chance to propose this project to an editor.
In the meanwhile, I sincerly hope you'll enjoy 'em!
The pages are inked with Indian Ink and coloured mostly with liquid acrylic paints, excepting for the white parts and the skin of the pink monster in the last two pages, which are tinted with opaque acrylic paints.
